Dog bed - but what size?

When it comes to the "right" dog bed or cushion, you are not only spoilt for choice when it comes to cover, colour, filling and design - no, the size is of course crucial when ordering a dog bed or dog cushion.

As a general rule, the bed, basket or cushion should be at least big enough for the dog to stretch out comfortably without tumbling off the cushion or falling out of bed. To do this, it is best to measure the dog once, i.e. the length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail/end of the back. It is also helpful to measure the height of the dog from the floor to the top of the head, or 2x the length of the legs. This will give you an approximate size of the lying area your dog needs. It is best to add another 5-10cm to make it really cosy, provided of course that you have enough space at home.

Every dog sleeps differently, so it's best to observe exactly how your dog prefers to sleep before deciding on a size. If he prefers to cuddle or turn himself in, the bed can be a little smaller. However, you should make sure that it is not too small.

When choosing a bed or pillow for a puppy, you should also bear in mind that the little guy will continue to grow. If you don't want to buy a new bed every 2-3 months, you should be able to estimate the approximate size of the adult dog when making your choice. Of course, you can also choose a smaller cushion or bed for puppies. Many puppies and small dogs feel particularly comfortable and safe in small beds.

Here is a small guide and breed categorisation regarding our cushion and bed sizes:

XS - S: Chihuahua, Papillon, Prager Rattler, Pekinese, Shi Tsu, Toy Poodle, Miniature Pinscher, small breed puppies and mixed breeds, etc.

S - M: Yorkshire Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Pug, French Bulldog, Sheltie, small to medium sized mixed breeds, etc.

M - L: Basset, Australian Shepherd, Beagle, English Bulldog, Chow Chow, Whippet, Schnauzer, medium-sized mixed breeds, etc.

L - XL: Dalmatian, German Shepherd, German Wirehaired Pointer, Collie, Bobtail, Bernese Mountain Dog, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Munsterlander, medium to large crossbreeds, etc.

XL - XXL: St Bernard, Great Dane, Hoverwart, Landseer, Newfoundland, Leonberger, Irish Wolfhound, large mixed breeds, etc.

Please note that these are only recommendations. Depending on the size, weight and age of the dog, the required lying area must be calculated more precisely according to the above diagram. If you are not sure, we are of course available by phone or email for advice and assistance!
